I am constantly asked what the main differences between road cycling and triathlon bikes. The obvious difference is that one of a triathlon race in an aerodynamic position, but sometimes we have to see aero bars road bikes, so what is the real difference? There is a small difference between the UCI legal bikes and triathlon bikes time, but they are very similar. The short answer is road bikes are designed to have three positions hand, are designed tri bikes to have one. Just because a bike has clip on aero bars, this does not mean that it is built in a triathlon bike for this purpose.
Draft legal triathlons are the only area where a road bike is used with aerobars stub little, but the ability to speak, I call them road bikes. They should be able to do everything a road racing bike and do that cyclists use the aero position of a draft legal triathlon any time.
Bicycles are legal against the Clock UCI have chairs that are about the triathlon bike. The wheel is configured so that the driver (say on the rivet, like them) on the nose of the saddle drive, has received the correct balance point for the effort in production. Triathlon bikes are designed to be ridden for long distances and at a submaximal speed. This means that the driver will put more weight on the saddle and aero bars because they do not want to hit the pedals hard enough to meet their needs. As such, the saddle and aero bars instead of the driver are the most effective or most aerodynamic. The reason why I have to distinguish between the two positions of the traditional triathlon is put very much forward to a greater hip angle and triathlete must allow a super aerodynamic position.
My problem with this position is twofold. First, the position is not strong and many triathletes more energy than pure aerodynamics give won. Secondly, the other is from the relative positions to their equilibrium experience a further strain on the knee and quadriceps held by overcompensation. This muscular imbalance is paid to the transition and the beginning of the race.
Triathlon is a perfect position where the driver is so strong and aerodynamic as possible, with enough comfort to be able to stay in the aerobars the entire event. This is a big problem. If you need to for a race to rest, because the aerodynamic position is not sustainable, you have a problem. They are slower and you will weary in the race. Remember, however, outweighs the power of the aerodynamic point, so your best position may not be where you think it is!
Since the position is on the bike and the configuration of the bicycle to support this position are two differences between the definition of a road bike and a triathlon bike, what about all the flying tube on some frames and tubes on the other? Some manufacturers advertise under on how fast your images based on wind tunnel tests, but I think it’s a lot of marketing hype for the most part. Here an essential fact: the time of trial or triathlon bike that more pull the riders on! The setting is in the boundary layer and as such are not as big a contribution to the aerodynamic than you think.
The concept of the boundary layer is a difficult question, so imagine the air next to you go the speed you are, and at some point in your body (and bike) air is not disturbed. There is a “layer” of air that passes in the absence of interruption is really your speed, because the layer of air molecules that do affect your skin. The affair between the two is the “boundary layer”. In my career, Industrial Design, I remember designing a room that was on a Boeing 777, and I remember learning of the boundary layer was 13 mm thick at this point. What all this means, a road bike with aero tubes are still not as fast as a triathlon bike with round tubes, provided that the driver has a good position! What this also means the aerobars, fork and front wheel have a huge impact on the aerodynamics, as they are outside the boundary layer. Some versions of Ironman occur very quickly with people cycling around the tube triathlon, but you can bet that they are positioned properly and has good wheels, aero bars and the fork.
At the end of the day there are many good triathlon bike. The first thing is to position critical. Second, the large wheels are important. Third, a good set of integrated aerobars are the shift lever at the ends of aerobars is important. Then hydration. Setting the bottle or vial Aerobar / hydro systems are much better than those behind the saddle. You have to move up and down the cylinder mounted on the saddle, so that an area that’s had good results.
Triathletes are responsible for all aspects of the three disciplines in the sport. The wheel is so critical, but overlooked when it is not surprising that much information bad trips to the transition area. If you around the fountain after a race and someone is sitting, says “Brand X” has won 10 Ironman bike, remember, the bicycle frame has not won the race. Actually, the athlete had the fastest time in the three legs!
